ADD and ADHD students should learn to advocate for themselves by asking for directions to be repeated. Sometimes they lose focus, feel embarrassed and guess. Then they end up either not completing an assignment or putting a lot of work into an assignment that was done incorrectly. Have your student ask for directions to be repeated as many times as it takes for them to clearly understand and complete the task.
Preparing Younger Kids For Homework
Give young kids that don’t get homework yet a project before dinner (i.e. picture). This will prepare them for homework when they get older.
Study Skills Tip
The best study skill is to not wait until the last minute. The more time a student has to prepare, the easier they can retain the material.
Safety and Learning
Students cannot learn until they feel safe. Anti-bullying programs are only part of the solution. Schools can never combat the meanness that is part of human nature. Victims must be taught how to deal with bullies when confronted.
Autistic and Asperger’s Students: In Home Tutoring & Life Lesson
The best lesson for autistic/Asperger’s students is flexibility. The ability to “go with the flow” will help them assimilate with society better.
ADHD & ADD Tutoring
Students with ADHD or ADD should break large assignments into smaller more manageable tasks. This way it won’t appear to be so overwhelming.
Sledding Correctly
When sledding, have kids lie on their backs and go feet first down the slope. Another safe way is sitting face forward on the sled. Either approach will greatly reduce the risk of head injuries.
Sledding Hazard
Make sure the bottom of the hill when sledding is away from an icy body of water. Children could fall through the ice and drown.
Sledding Safety
When sledding on a hill, make sure the land at the bottom is safe. It should be either fenced in so a sled won’t go into the street or have plenty of space to stop without entering the street. It should also be free of trees and other obstacles since an out of control sled could slam into them causing serious bodily injury.
Sledding Danger
Make sure kids do not create makeshift jumps or ramps when sledding. Kids have broken bones, become paralyzed, or died from landing wrong.
