Tourette’s syndrome is a disorder characterized by tics (involuntary, rapid, sudden movements) and/or vocal outbursts that occur repeatedly. It’s an inherited, neurological disorder that is first noticed in childhood, usually between the ages of 7 and 10. Kids with Tourette’s syndrome often face the embarrassment and struggle for suppression of having their tics/outbursts in public. This is especially difficult in school when other children may tease them over it.
Concussions: Cognitive Rest
If a student has recently received a concussion, it is important to practice “cognitive rest”. This is avoiding mentally taxing activities. It is also critical to take a break from sports and other activities that could lead to another concussion.
Concussions: Treatment
For many kids with a concussion, the only treatment needed is rest. A concussion disrupts the normally slow traffic of salts in and out of brain cells. During the injury, salts pour into cells, and it takes the body time to restore the balance back to normal.
Concussions
Kids can get a concussion in all kinds of sports including soccer, lacrosse, football and cheerleading. They can also happen in recreational activities such as bicycle riding and sailing. A concussion can be a serious medical condition so all safety precautions should be taken when performing these activities.
Organization: Papers
It is important for students to file each subject’s papers into its own section so they can be retrieved again if needed.
Everybody Gets a Trophy vs. Competition
The “everybody gets a trophy” kids tend to always need constant encouragement, expect accolades for completing routine tasks and respond poorly to correction or criticism. Competition can be good for children. They learn how to handle winning and losing.
Cold and Flu Prevention: Remote Controls
To prevent colds and flu, clean all remote controls often. They end up containing as much bacteria as a toilet flush handle.

Bullying On-Line Reporting: Natick, MA & Weston, MA
Some schools have a bullying on-line reporting form found on their website. Hopefully parents and students will use this if ever a victim of or witness of bullying. Mandated by Massachusetts law, every school system must have a bullying prevention and intervention plan. Natick, MA and Weston, MA are some of the many communities that have refined their plan to include a bullying on-line reporting form. Take full advantage of this resource if it is in your community, as it may be easier for a victim to fill out the on-line form than it is to tell someone face to face.
College ADHD Accommodations
By law, all colleges and universities receiving federal funding must provide “reasonable accommodations” for students with ADHD. When looking at these schools, shop around for the ones with the best support services as some provide more than others.
