October 20, 2013 By Y3K

Praising effort leads to a more confident child. Acknowledging their hard work motivates kids because effort is a factor they can control. Students cannot control the grades they receive, but they can control their preparation and determination to do their best. Applauding their effort reinforces the message that learning and improving is achievable when they try.

Verbal Linguistic Learners

October 15, 2013 By Y3K

Verbal (linguistic) learners prefer both the written and spoken word. They depend on language reasoning rather than abstract visual information. For example in math they find word problems easier than algebra equations.

Students that use this style find it easy to express themselves both in writing and verbally. They tend to enjoy reading and writing. They also tend to know the meaning of many words and regularly make an effort to find the meaning of new words.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a set of standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in the subjects of English and math that the states voluntarily adopt. 45 states including Massachusetts have signed on. Tomorrow we will take a closer look at some of the changes coming soon.
