Up to half of the people with tuberous sclerosis develop autism and the hope is that any treatment that works well against tuberous sclerosis might also benefit others on the autism spectrum. Tuberous sclerosis is caused by one of several mutations in genes that regulate cell growth and strikes about 1 in 6,000 newborns. People with it commonly develop tumors, autism, and/or epilepsy. The hope is that studying this disease may provide new insights into autism.
New Autism & Asperger’s Hope?
There is potentially new hope for those with autism and Asperger’s. Researchers are now studying an old drug called rapamycin in clinical trials for a rare genetic condition called tuberous sclerosis complex. This study is drawing attention because the disease often leads to autism. Some have been reported mental advances and dramatic gains from this drug trial.

Responsibility For Schoolwork and Belongings
Many kids need to make mistakes before they can take full responsibility for their schoolwork and belongings. The best way is to review what is the right way of doing something and provide reminders. However do not rescue them by doing the task for them. They will learn from their mistakes.
Backpack Safety
Overloaded school backpacks cause more than 20,000 back injuries per year. Make sure the backpack weighs no more than 10-15% of the child’s total body weight when in use. Have wide padded shoulder straps and a hip strap to distribute weight. Make sure the backpack does not hang below the student’s hip line. Also keep the heaviest books closest to the back.
Raising A Child Who Likes To Read
The best strategy for raising a child who likes to read is to read to, with, and in front of your child at least 15 minutes every day. Do this until they are in middle school. Research confirms that reading daily with your child in a fun, bonding and expressive way is the most important thing you can do to have them want to read. This is because kids will associate reading with pleasure. The daily reading can be anything including books, magazines, newspapers, etc.
Socialize Asperger’s Children
It’s important to get Asperger’s children to socialize as often as possible. Sports and play dates are great ways to get these kids included.

Give the school contact information for your child’s doctor or allergist in case there is a bad food reaction. This doctor should be someone familiar with your student’s food allergy problem. Preferably it should not be a random walk in clinic doctor that does not know your child, but a doctor that can address the issue with school staff in case of a problem.

Provide the school with information on what kind of treatment your student should receive in case of a food allergy reaction. For this you need to assume that your child ingested a food that they shouldn’t have. What would you want a teacher or school nurse that doesn’t know your child to do? Prepare for the worst. Food allergies are not predictable. Even if your child has had only minor reactions in the past, that doesn’t mean the next one won’t be severe.
