MCAS Tests
What are the MCAS tests?
Every March through May of each year, students across the state participate in the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). They are tests that measure the degree to which students are learning the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks relative to the expectations for each grade level. The MCAS English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics tests are given to all public school students beginning in 3rd grade through 8th grade and then again in 10th grade. Students in 9th grade or higher take the Science and Technology / Engineering (STE) tests.
How do the MCAS tests work?
The MCAS tests consist of two MCAS English Language Arts (ELA) sessions and two MCAS Mathematics sessions including:
- Multiple choice questions
- Essay writing
- Short answers
Graduation requirement?
The MCAS tests like many other assessment tests can prove to be very stressful. Students are often faced with the dilemma of harsh penalties for not passing, such as not receiving a diploma or the withholding of opportunities like college. Students must pass the 10th grade English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics tests in order to graduate. In addition, they must also pass one of the high school Science and Technology / Engineering (STE) tests that are given in 9th grade through 12th grade to earn their high school diploma.
