Confronting Bullies and Parental Support

September 22, 2012 By Y3K

If your child is being bullied, they need your complete support. Facing a bully can be a hard and scary thing for a child, so they need to know that you believe them and have their back. Your child needs to know that if they defend themselves against a bully and get in trouble at school for doing so, you will support them. It can be one of the most difficult things to do in the world but confronting a bully can be an opportunity for children to face their fears and learn to stand up for themselves.

Some signs that your child may be a victim of bullying include: fear of going to school, negative self talk, drop in grades, and sudden change in opinion about a specific person.

Study Skills

September 18, 2012 By Y3K

To make new information stick (vocabulary, facts & etc), try spacing out study sessions over several weeks. Research on what is know as the “spacing effect” shows that we form stronger and more lasting memories by exposing ourselves to information over time. Repeated cycles of learning, consolidating, and then re-encountering material fix it firmly in our minds. Avoid last minute cramming if you can help it.

Counterfeit ADHD Medication on the Rise

September 12, 2012 By Y3K

The US Food and Drug Administration has sent out a warning about counterfeit versions of the ADHD drug Adderall 30 mg available to purchase on-line. Adderall has been in short supply for months. According to the FDA, the counterfeit version of this drug contains the wrong active ingredients. They warn that Adderall may be fake if it has any of the following:

Pills come in a blister package

There are misspellings on the package such as “NDS” instead of “NDC”, “Aspartrte” instead of “Aspartate”, or “Singel” instead of “Single”.

The tablets have no markings on them.

Be sure to check for these misspellings and errors on drug store purchased medications too.

Autism and Physical Symptoms

September 8, 2012 By Y3K

Autism is not just a brain problem. Many people with autism, which affects 1 in 110 children, often have physical symptoms including sleep disorders, seizures, energy problems, immune system issues, and digestive troubles. Treating these symptoms can improve the lives of autistic children. For example treating their stomach when gastrointestinal problems are evident may reduce distressed and autistic behaviors.

Natick Public Schools

September 5, 2012 By Y3K

In the town of Natick, MA 42% (almost half) or $ .42 of every tax dollar the town receives goes to the school department. This leaves 58% or $ .58 of every tax dollar to be divided up among all remaining town departments. For example public safety only gets 11% or $ .11 of every tax dollar and most other departments receive significantly less (elderly, public works, park & rec, town hall, etc). Most other cities and towns have comparable figures. Some believe that more money should go to schools while others maintain that schools receive too much of a percent of the total tax dollars. What are your thoughts?
