The Y3K Tutor In Your Home 17th Annual Buddy Dog Humane Society Collection Drive has just come to an end. This year the number of emails and phone calls for this worthy cause was truly overwhelming. Thank you to the many, many families that brought donations to our drop off locations and for the dog supplies we personally picked up at your homes.

Haynes Elementary School Tutor Sudbury MA

The Haynes Organization of Parents in Sudbury will be having their annual auction fundraiser this coming weekend.  Y3K Tutor In Your Home donated tutoring and test preparation to the auction.  The money raised will benefit the students of the Haynes Elementary School by supporting STEAM Enrichment programs as well as classroom equipment, supplies and professional development for teachers.

Here is the complete list of items collected for the Y3K Tutor In Your Home 17th Annual Buddy Dog Humane Society Collection Drive.  There are three convenient drop-off locations.  Pick-ups are the first Saturday of each month.  Our collection drive is from November 1st to January 10th.  Call now!

Most Needed Items:

  • Martingale collars of all sizes

  • Bleach

  • Non-clumping, clay cat litter

  • Laundry detergent

  • Canned dog food (any brand or variety)

  • Plastic storage bins in medium and large sizes with lids!

  • Instinct Brand Rabbit Formula (Wet and Dry) Cat food

For the Cats and Kittens:

  • Canned cat food (any brand, but not the shredded variety)

  • Towels

  • Fishing pole toys

  • Small, rubber-bottom bath mats for cats who shred their newspaper (New or gently used)

  • Non-clumping, clay cat litter

For the Dogs and Puppies:

  • Special Diets:

    • ​Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Venison dog food

    • Hill’s K/D

    • Low-fat, low-calorie, or high-fiber

    • Hills Science Diet ID canned dog food and kibble!

  • Sturdy leashes, 6-foot and 8-foot

  • Toys (with no choking hazards such as beads)

  • Bully sticks, DentaStix, Greenies (no rawhides please)

  • Blankets, towels, sheets

  • Pill Pockets

  • Soft, chewy treats (soft Milkbones, BilJacs, Buddy Biscuits, etc.)

  • Canned dog food (any brand or variety)

For the Staff:

  • Office supplies: pens, duct tape, etc…especially wet erase markers!

  • Paper towels and tissues

  • First-aid items: band-aids, antibiotic ointment

  • Dish sponges, dish soap

  • Paw Safe ice melt (in the fall and winter)

Lower Standards in Boston

90%-100% of graduates at most high schools throughout Massachusetts meet the minimum number of courses in English, math, science and other core subjects that state guidelines call for. However the Boston public school system has ignored those guidelines, called MassCore. MassCore standards include four years of English and math, three years of science and social studies, and two years of foreign language.

Instead Boston Public Schools have opted to keep lower standards for earning a diploma than the rest of Massachusetts. For example, Boston requires only three years of math instead of the four required at schools following MassCore. The reason for the lower standards is so they can increase high school graduation rates. Many claim that these lower standards de-value their diploma compared to most other communities that have significantly higher standards.

Lower Boston standards have some major consequences. In 2017 only 31% of Boston high school graduates met the state’s MassCore guidelines according to state data, putting the rest behind their peers at other Massachusetts schools. 50% of Boston high school graduates who enroll in college fail to earn degrees within six years, according to a report by the Boston Private Industry Council. Many of these students that have earned a high school diploma with lower standards, felt academically unprepared for college. A state report showed that nearly 75% of Boston graduates who went on to community college required at least one remedial course.
