Crossing the Street in Winter Ice & Snow
Teach your kids to make sure that in winter snowy/icy weather, all cars have come to a complete stop before they start to cross a street. This is true even if they have a traffic light “walk” signal at a crosswalk. Cars can slide unexpectedly as they are trying to stop on the snow or ice and cause major injuries or death to the children as they are crossing.
Brookline Public Schools Enrollment Solution?
Brookline Public Schools in Brookline, MA have a major problem with increased enrollment. They are considering the traditional approach of asking voters in the spring to approve property tax increases that would be used to fund expansions of multiple schools to accommodate the increasing number of students. The Brookline School Committee is also taking a non-traditional approach to dealing with this major drag on town finances. Recently there was a proposed policy that would exclude homes straddling the town borders with Boston and Newton from sending their children to Brookline schools unless they pay taxes on at least 50% of the property to Brookline. Under the new proposal, residents of a home on the town line must also qualify to register to vote in Brookline based on its location. If they don’t, the household’s children would not be allowed to attend Brookline schools.
Extended Learning Time Parent Backlash
There has been a push by some to extend the school day. They call it ELT (Extended Learning Time). There is a growing backlash from parents that in fact find this to be a bad idea. They maintain that longer school days cut into family time, sports, theater activities and tire out kids. Those promoting this idea tend to be wealthy philanthropy organizations with big ideas about education and trying to push their ideas on middle class families who are on the receiving end. Kids need a chance to unwind and have free play. A 6-7 hour school day is more than enough time to get everything done that they should be doing. What do you think?
