The key to preventing the summer slide is to get your child involved in everyday activities that reinforce and utilize the concepts they learned in school. A little work every day on a troubling area will help your student improve and feel more confident when they return to school in the fall. Starting tomorrow we will have lots of great, easy tips you can do to prevent the summer slide.
Summer Slide
Did you know that students over the summer often lose some of the knowledge they have learned earlier in the year? One study showed that students can lose about 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in math and can lose 1 month of grade level equivalency for all other subjects. A study showed 66% of teachers have to spend 3-4 weeks re-teaching students old material at the beginning of the school year. 24% of teachers spend at least 5 – 6 weeks re-teaching material from the previous year.
Don’t let the summer slide happen to your child! Learning over the summer is important. The key to making summer learning successful is it has to be fun. If not, your child will not be invested in it. Over the next several weeks Y3K Tutor In Your Home will give you tips to help you prevent the summer slide. Check back tomorrow!

“Our Y3K Tutor In Your Home tutor has provided excellent academic support to my 7th grade son. Last year we had battles and tears over homework. This year with Jerry’s weekly tutoring, not only has my son’s resistance to homework and studying decreased, his grades have gotten better and better with Jerry’s help and guidance. He has an ability to relate to my child that somehow engages and challenges him to think at the same time. He never tells my son what the answers should be, but asks good questions, turns learning into something fun and provides clear academic structures and support all at the same time. He is easy to work with and a delight to have found. I’m happy that my son is so agreeable to working with him and I, for one, couldn’t be happier with the services we have received from Y3K. Everything from science lab reports, to math and writing Jerry seems to have a way to help both my son and me through the homework and demands of 7th grade.”

The owner and head tutor was recommended by my daughter’s Algebra teacher at school. He has been instrumental in helping her as a non-native English speaker, understand the language of the Algebra taught in her school. He also has provided guidance and support in helping her enhance and develop her writing skills. My daughter has developed a trusting and respectful working relationship with him. She knows that she can rely on his expert advice and support on a variety of subjects and fields and is excited about continuing their association upon her return from spring break.

SAT vs. ACT
SAT or ACT? Which is better?
SAT – no science
ACT – includes science
SAT – essay writing mandatory
ACT – no essay writing (optional)
SAT – points taken off
ACT – guessing is ok as points are not taken off
There you have it. We recommend your student choose the test that plays more towards their strengths. If you want to avoid science, go with the SAT. If you want to avoid essay writing, go with the ACT. If you want the ability to guess and not have points taken off, the ACT is for you. Let us know which one you like better.
