Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s Test Taking Strategies #11: Timed Test – First Do The Easy Ones
Some students go in sequential order of the test and get caught up on a question. They spend extra time on that one question and then run out of time. They end up not answering the last few questions due to lack of time. Not anymore!
The trick to defeating a timed test is to work out of order. Answer the easy questions you know. Skip the hard questions or questions that will take a long time to answer. Then after you have answered all the questions you can, go back and spend the rest of your time on the challenging ones. This way a student will earn a higher test score for answering more correct answers.

Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s Test Taking Strategies #10: Multiple Choice Disaster
Make sure a skipped question is also skipped on the scantron/fill in the bubble page as well. If not everything will be wrong! For example if you skip #8 and answer #9, make sure that #9’s answer is in the right spot and not accidentally in #8’s bubble. When students make this common mistake every answer on the scantron sheet will be wrong from #8 until the end of the test.

Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s Test Taking Strategies #9: Reading Tests
Most of the standardized reading tests have a long essay to read and a bunch of questions to answer. One test-taking trick is to read the questions before reading the essay. Then as you read the essay, the answer will stand out once you get to that point in the story.

Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s Test Taking Strategies #7: Check Your Work
Make sure that every question has been answered. Sometimes students get nervous, lose their train of thought, and forget to answer questions leaving them blank. Take time to verify everything has been completed.

Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s Test Taking Strategies #6: Pace Yourself
During a timed test, never spend a lot of time on any particular question. If all questions are worth the same amount of points, one could get up to 5 extra questions correct in the time they are wasting on one they are struggling with. NEVER use too much time on one question.

Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s Test Taking Strategies #5: Play The Odds
If there is no penalty for wrong answers such as PARCC, MCAS, school test and ACT, ALWAYS guess if you do not know the answer. NEVER leave an answer blank. The chances of receiving credit when guessing the answer may be as low as 5% – 20%. However if a student leaves a question blank, they have a guaranteed 0% chance of receiving credit. Guess when it is to your advantage.
