People with ADHD and ADD are often helped by posting notes in strategic locations reminding them of tasks needed to be done.

Working in a quiet, non-distracting area can be very beneficial to ADHD and ADD students. Most kids’ rooms usually have a lot of distractions (toys, games, posters, books, magazines, etc.).

ADHD and ADD students can benefit from a “To Do List”. Make the list with a specific order and prioritize your time.

ADHD and ADD students should write down notes when directions are given. Another option is to use a digital recorder and play back later.

ADD and ADHD students should learn to advocate for themselves by asking for directions to be repeated. Sometimes they lose focus, feel embarrassed and guess. Then they end up either not completing an assignment or putting a lot of work into an assignment that was done incorrectly. Have your student ask for directions to be repeated as many times as it takes for them to clearly understand and complete the task.

Give young kids that don’t get homework yet a project before dinner (i.e. picture). This will prepare them for homework when they get older.

The best study skill is to not wait until the last minute. The more time a student has to prepare, the easier they can retain the material.

Students cannot learn until they feel safe. Anti-bullying programs are only part of the solution. Schools can never combat the meanness that is part of human nature. Victims must be taught how to deal with bullies when confronted.

The best lesson for autistic/Asperger’s students is flexibility. The ability to “go with the flow” will help them assimilate with society better.

Students with ADHD or ADD should break large assignments into smaller more manageable tasks. This way it won’t appear to be so overwhelming.
